CAN and J1850 Network Validation Services

DGE will make sure that all the electronic modules in your vehicle communicate properly.  We are experts in CAN (Controlled Area Network) and J1850 communications protocols.  We can validate your network systems at the vehicle, ECU, or microprocessor-level.

Our vehicle-level validation suite includes:

  • Signal Timing & Level Measurement

  • Operation and Parameter Measurement During Module Offsetting

  • Arbitration Testing

  • Resistance and Capacitance Measurement

  • Message Traffic Capture and Analysis

Testing can be performed under a variety of environmental conditions.  Please view our network validation datasheet for more information.

DGE engineers have been extensively involved in validating communications bus systems and have been instrumental in exposing and resolving a number of potential issues before vehicles go into production.

Issues Uncovered by DGE Vehicle Network Validations:

  • Signal bit timings/voltage levels out of specification
  • Signal characteristics unacceptably affected by temperature / offset / low voltage
  • Improper fault confinement or recovery behavior
  • Improper arbitration or loss of arbitration handling
  • Improper interframe timing (negates arbitration)
  • Inconsistent behavior due to heavy bus utilization
  • ECU operating voltage out of specification
  • Erratic behavior under low or dropout voltage conditions
  • ECU or network wakeup under unexpected conditions
  • Improper module termination/network time constant
  • Transient noise / source
  • Introduction of noise to the bus by a particular ECU/tool
  • Improper handling of diagnostic queries
  • Undocumented/faulty message transmissions
  • Improper message cycle rate, length, message format
  • Improper data format in message bytes
  • Multiple ECUs transmitting same message ID
  • ECU missed message transmissions
  • ECU responding to improperly formatted messages
  • ECU failure to transmit spontaneous/status messages upon appropriate user input
  • ECU failure to transmit required startup or reset messages
  • Module failure to wakeup with network management message
